I thought I would share with you my adventure into bees. I like to read a lot and had started reading about the decline of our pollinators and how devastating that will be for us. It was very interesting and I started trying to educate myself on how I could help. We don’t use any type of chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, etc.) on our property, so I thought we could be a safe haven for the pollinators. I started to research plants and other things that we could do to attract them to our yard. Little by little, I planted native plants and other pollinator-friendly bushes and trees. I have hummingbird feeders and a pond as a source of water for all creatures.
One Friday night after a horrendous week, I was curled up in my pajamas and was on my second glass of wine while scrolling on my phone. An ad came up for honeybee hives. I thought, this is great! Just what we need to attract bees and help them proliferate! I then proceeded to order a package of bees! I was so excited!!
The next morning, I was a little concerned. I don’t know how to care for bees! I have so much to learn! Oh yeah…and I have TERRIBLE local allergic reactions to stings, and…honestly, I’m afraid of the little creatures! But, I thought for the good of mankind, I could do this!! So I studied and researched any and all information I could get before the big day arrived. The amount of information is staggering and I still didn’t feed competent enough to give the gals a good home.
Spring comes and I receive an email stating when my bees would be delivered to the post office. I almost fainted. I was so nervous!! The day came to pick them up and I couldn’t make myself go get them and drive with them in my car! I sweet-talked my partner Mike into going for me. When he came back with the bees and we had to get them out of the car and into the hive, I really thought I was going to need an adult diaper before it was over lol.
But…we did it and we are now loving it! There’s so much to learn and become educated about. They are the most interesting creatures I have ever seen and have such an important job to do!
So, moral of the story: some things are meant to be when drinking wine 🙂
